It hardly seems 15 months since I got the phone call to say you and your colleagues had been on the helicopter. We had heard on the news a helicopter had been shot down over Basra, and the whole world saw those images of the jubilant crowd.
The pain hasn't got any easier, and it still doesn't seem like you're truly gone from our lives. It was carnival week in Dawlish last week and I still expected to see you participating in the Pram Race in one of your wacky outfits :)
You'll never be forgotten Paul, you were liked by everyone and you brought a smile wherever you went. There aren't many men like you (or your brother Mark) around. I feel proud to have been your friend and look forward to having a (few) beers with you again someday. Until we do eventually meet again i'll continue to think of you and keep your memories safe within me xxx RIP mate xx
The Finest
The Finest
by Nordahl Grieg
Death can be bright as a beacon,
revealing to everyone's eye
each life as it flares and sputters -
it is the finest who die.
The strong and the daring of spirit,
who dreamed and desired the most;
they said their goodbyes, and they went off
to fight, from a distant friend's coast.
They calmly went off to their duty,
entrusting the world to the rest:
The diligent, patient survivors -
those are the second best.
The finest are murdered in prison,
swept off by bullets and sea.
The finest will not be our future;
they never expected to be.
We honor them with resignation,
remember their names in despair;
But we are betraying the finest
with each bitter, sorrowfull tear.
Don't grieve them to death! Be inspired!
Their courage has set them apart.
Know that the blood of the fallen
flows through each valiant heart.
Those who have known them are richer.
Their legacy will never end.
They live on as 'Mother' and 'Father',
As 'Comrade-in-Arms' and as 'Friend'.
Their sacrifice bought us a future.
Their children will buy it again.
And we shall write on their headstones:
'The finest will always remain.'
Always
As the sun starts to rise,
I'm with you
When you hear a bird sing,
I'm there
For each raindrop that falls,
think of me
And the love that we'll
always share
In the rush of the wind
feel my touch
In the quiet of night
hear my voice
If you start to stumble
take my hand
And know that it was
my choice
When tears start to fall feel
my comfort
If you feel low share
my pride
Don't ever think that you've
lost me
For I will always be there
by your side
